HISTORY ASTON VILLA FC

Aston Villa stood in 1874 and used Villa Park stadium from 1897 until now. Aston Villa is one of the founding members of the Football League and is immediately successful, winning five titles in seven seasons.

The club reached its former glory in the early twentieth century by winning six Premier League titles until 1910. The triumphs could only be repeated in the 1980-81 season, plus the Champions Cup title the following season 1981-82.

The most difficult period ever experienced by Aston Villa when they had to relegation to Division Three in 1971. Only after ten years later when Ron Saunders became manager, Villa again managed to regain the title of League Champion.

The next season in 1982 under the care of manager Tony Barton won the UEFA Champions Cup by beating Bayern Munich 1-0 which was accompanied by the European Super Cup a year later, Aston Villa is one of only 4 English clubs ever to win the European top competition. In 1987 they were again relegated but quickly returned to the top.

1993 under manager Ron Atkinson succeeded in becoming the English League runner-up and won their respective League Cups against Manchester United in 1994 and Leeds United in 1996. Having handled manager Martin O'Neill in 2006, Villa became more competitive in the Premier League. O'Neill's policy is better known for using many of the original players of Great Britain.

After being defeated by Manchester United in the 2010 League Cup, Martin O'Neill resigned in August 2010 and was replaced by former Liverpool manager Gerard Houlier. Due to health problems Houllier finally resigned to be replaced by former Birmingham City Villa rivals rivals Alex McLeish.

Since 2006 Aston Villa is owned by US businessman Randy Lerner, who bought most of Doug Ellis's shares. After buying ownership of the club, Lerner appointed himself as club president to replace Ellis.
