History of Liverpool Football Club's Origin

Liverpool was founded on March 15, 1892 as a result of a feud between the Everton FC Committee and John Houldings as President of the Club who is also the owner of Anfield stadium.

Earlier in 1891 John Houlding, as a tenant of the Anfield Stadium, bought the land directly and proposed raising the rental price from £ 100 to £ 250 per year. Everton, who has played at Anfield for seven years, turned him down and there was a feud.

LIVERPOOL YEAR 1892-93

The club was named Everton FC and Athletic Grounds, Ltd., or summarized Everton Athletic, but the English Football Association (FA) refused to admit there were two teams named Everton. In June 1892, John Houlding finally chose the name of Liverpool F.C. as a new name, and Liverpool transformed into a serious force in the English football competition.

He debuted as a professional football club playing Liverpool in the Lancashire League and managed to become a champion before finally joining the Second Division Premier League (now called Football League Championship) in the 1893-94 season. In his first season in the Second Division, Liverpool immediately became champion and entitled to promotion to Division I (now named English Premier League). Liverpool did not wait long to become league champions, because in his first season in Division I (1900-01), Liverpool successfully won the Division I and repeat it again five years later.

THE DEVELOPMENT

The first FA Cup Final was done in 1914, although they eventually defeated Burnley 1-0. After that Liverpool won 2 consecutive league championship season 1921-22 and 1922-23, but did not get the trophy again until the 1946-47 season when it won the title of the 5th league. After being in Division I for more than 50 year, Liverpool finally suffered a slump and relegated to Division II in the 1953-54 season.

Shortly after Liverpool were defeated by Worcester City, the club outside the Football League in the 1958-59 FA Cup season, Bill Shankly was appointed manager in December 1959. Shankly overhauled the team on a large scale by releasing 24 old players and using a room at the stadium Anfield to hold a coaching meeting.

This room is called 'The Boot Room' which managed to give birth to Liverpool's legendary managers in the future. It was in this room that Bill Shankly and other Boot Room members like Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan and Reuben Bennett started to build up the Liverpool powers that envied the other teams. The result of a renovation by Bill Shankly began to fruition when successfully promoted back to Division I in the 1961-62 season and became the league champion in the 1963-64 season.

HEYDAY

Liverpool earned its best time under manager Bill Shankly. This coach then became a legend of Liverpool. He is highly respected for successfully bringing Liverpool back to the first division after previously being in the second division for 8 seasons. To honor his services, a statue of Bill Shankly was made at the entrance of Anfield.

Notable players of the time include Ray Clemence, Mark Lawrenson, Graeme Souness, Ian Callaghan, Phil Neal, Kevin Keegan, Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish (102) and Ian Rush (346 goals)

ERA BILL SHANKLY

After winning the first FA Cup in 1965 and winning the league in the 1965-66 season, Bill Shankly won the league and UEFA Cup titles in the 1972-73 season. The next season Bill Shankly managed to present the FA Cup title after massacring Newcastle United 3-0. No one would have thought that the FA Cup title was the last offering of a Bill Shankly. Because suddenly Bill Shankly decided to retire.

Players and Liverpudlian (nicknames for Liverpool FC fanatics from Liverpool city, while fans from out of town called Liverpool Kopites) tried to persuade, even the workers in Liverpool threatened to go on strike. But Bill Shankly remained on his stand and handed the managerial stick to his assistant, Bob Paisley. Bill Shankly eventually retired in 1974 and joined Liverpudlian in the stands of The Kop.

ERA BOB PAISLEY

Liverpool's glory with Bill Shankly was continued by Bob Paisley, who was 55 years old at the time. He served as Liverpool manager from 1974 to 1983 and only at the beginning of the year Bob Paisley was unable to give the title to Liverpool. For 9 years Bob Paisley served as Liverpool FC manager, he gave a total of 21 trophies, including 3 Champions Cups, 1 UEFA Cup, 6 English League champions and 3 League Cups respectively.

With all the titles it is not wrong if Bob Paisley became the most successful manager who ever handle the English club. Not only successfully gave the title to Liverpool FC, but Bob Paisley also successful in regenerating the body of Liverpool FC with the appearance of young stars seperti: Graeme Souness, Alan Hansen, Kenny Dalglish and Ian Rush. Although Bob Paisley will bequeath a great and talented young squad, but with all the title incisions it will be very hard for any successor.

ERA JOE FAGAN

Paisley retired in 1983 and was replaced by his assistant Joe Fagan. As the successor to Bob Paisley, Joe Fagan who was then 62 years old, in his first season managed to present a treble for Liverpool: the English League champions, League Cup winners and Champions Cup winners. Raihan this makes Liverpool FC as the first football club in the UK who won 3 titles at once in one season.

Unfortunately, the golden record was a bit tarnished by the incident at Heysel Stadium. The incident that occurred before the Champions League final between Liverpool and Juventus killed 39 people, mostly Juventus supporters. This incident resulted in the ban for all English football clubs to compete in Europe for 5 years. And Liverpool FC was banned from all European competition for 10 years which was eventually reduced to 6 years.

In addition, 14 Liverpudlian were indicted guilty of an event known as the Heysel Tragedy. After the horrific event, Joe Fagan decided to retire and provide managerial stick next to Kenny Dalglish who was appointed as a player-manager. Joe Fagan handed Liverpool manager FC a job to Kenny Dalglish who by then had become a great player but still had to prove the capability as a manager.

ERA KENNY DALGLISH

During the leadership of Kenny Dalglish, Liverpool FC was brought into English league championship 3 times and FA Cup winners twice, including a double Premier League title and FA Cup winners in the 1985-86 season. If not exposed to sanctions from UEFA, Liverpool FC can be sure to be a serious contender to win the Champion Cup at that time.

The success of Liverpool FC during the leadership of Kenny Dalglish again overshadowed by another terrible event that is the Hillsborough Tragedy. In the FA Cup semi-final match against Nottingham Forest F.C. April 15, 1989, hundreds of spectators from outside the stadium forced into the stadium that caused Liverpudlian who was in the stands wedged the stadium barrier fence. This resulted in 94 Liverpudlian deaths at the scene, 1 Liverpudlian died 4 days later in the hospital and 1 other Liverpudlian died after coma for 4 years.

As a result of this tragedy Hillsborough British government to do research again about the security factor football stadium in the country. Known as the Taylor Report, the cause of the Hillsborough Tragedy is the viewer factor that exceeds the capacity of the stadium due to the lack of anticipation from the security forces. Eventually the British government passed a law requiring every British division club to abolish the stands. After being a living witness of the terrible tragedies of Heysel and Hillsborough, 'King' Kenny Dalglish can never escape the trauma that afflicted him. Finally on February 22, 1990 he announced his resignation as Liverpool FC manager.

The announcement that shocked the world of football at the time, because Liverpool FC is competing with Arsenal in the race for the English Premier League title. The reason mentioned by Kenny Dalglish at the time was no longer able to face the pressure in menahkodai Liverpool FC. For several weeks Liverpool FC was handled by first team coach Ronnie Moran before Liverpool FC appointed Graeme Souness as the next manager. 'King' Kenny Dalglish was then remembered as the greatest legend of Liverpool FC for being so successful both as a player and a manager.

PRIMARY TIME

Going 'King' Kenny Dalglish and two terrible tragedies (Heysel and Hillsborough) seem to provide trauma, punishment or deep condemnation for Liverpool FC. The arrival of Graeme Souness did not change the fortunes of Liverpool FC. Although Souness could have given the FA Cup title in 1992, but with a poor player transfer policy and a rather confusing strategy implementation made Liverpool appear inconsistent that season.

Another thing that worsens Souness and Liverpudlian's relationship is when Souness recounts her post-heart health recovery process to The Sun newspaper. It is well known that the Merseyside community boycotted The Sun, which often cornered Liverpudlian about the Hillsborough Tragedy.

On January 28, 1994, Graeme Souness finally resigned as Liverpool FC manager after being eliminated from the English League Cup and FA Cup. Coach Roy Evans is appointed manager of Liverpool FC next. Liverpool FC are in 8th place in the worst diving standings a last 29 years. Although winning the title Graeme Souness is not successful, but during his leadership many young talents are born: Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman, Jamie Redknapp, Rob Jones and David James. The next Liverpool manager is senior coach Roy Evans who has been with Liverpool FC for over 30 years.

In the 1994-95 season Liverpool were ranked 5th Premier League and won the League Cup by beating Bolton Wanderers 2-1. Roy Evans managed to restore the hallmark of Liverpool's pass and move. But Liverpool's glamorous and beautiful game at this time is not balanced by the determination and aggressiveness of its players, so Liverpool in the time of Roy Evans is often called Spice Boys.

In addition to the maturing players like Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Jamie Redknapp, during the coaching Roy Evans emerged young talent named Michael Owenyang scored 18 goals and became PFA Young Player of the Year Award in 1998. In the 1998-99 season Liverpool FC attracted Frenchman Gérard Houllier to partner with Roy Evans as joint manager.

But Roy Evans felt uncooperative with Houllier, thus resigning in November1998. After becoming the sole manager, Houllier completely overhauled the team by including players such as Sami Hyypia, Stephan Henchoz, Markus Babbel, Dietmar Hamann, Gary McAllister and Emile Heskey.

In addition to appearing young star Michael Owen, Houllier also managed to promote young talent with extraordinary talent named Steven Gerrard. In 2001, Houllier's second season as sole manager, Liverpool won the Treble: FA Cup, UEFA Europa League League Cup. 2001 became the best year of Liverpool FC after suffering a decline in achievements in previous years.

This year Liverpool FC won the English League Cup, FA Cup, UEFA Cup, Community Shield and UEFA Super Cup. This success led to a glimmer of hope for Liverpool to win the Premiership title last achieved in 1990. In 2003Liverpool FC won the English League Cup and was ranked 4th in the 1993-94 season to qualify for UEFA Champions League qualification. Despite successfully awarding a number of titles for Liverpool FC, but Houllier's defensive tactics are considered not to compete for the English Premier League title.

The tactics of defending and counting on counterattacks are very easy to anticipate by opponents, so on May 24, 2004, Gérard Houllier was replaced by Rafael Benitez.

ERA RAFAEL BENITEZ

Rafael Benitez came to Liverpool after successfully taking Valencia to the Spanish League 2 times champions and UEFA Cup winners. Liverpudlian hopes to become English Premier League champions again soared after Benitez managed to bring Liverpool won the UEFA Champions League 2004-05 for the 5th time.

In the final which is remembered as the greatest party of all time, Liverpool managed to beat A.C. Milan after trailing 0-3 in the first half. But goals from captain Steven Gerrard, Vladimír Šmicer and Xabi Alonso's penalty managed to bring Liverpool FC into extra-time and penalties. Liverpool goalkeeper, Jerzy Dudek became a hero after successfully holding back a Shevchenko penalty kick. Victory in the Champions League final this is the reason for Liverpool captain and living legend Steven Gerrard FC to not move to another club. The decision was greeted happily by the Liverpudlian.

Liverpool FC then brought Rafael Benitez to become European Super Cup champion by beating UEFA Cup champions CSKA Moscow with a score of 3-1. The 2006 FA Cup was the last trophy offered by Rafael Benitez for Liverpool FC. On the way to the FA Cup final, Liverpool FC beat Luton Town 5-3, Manchester United 1-0, Birmingham City 7-0 and beat Chelsea 2-1 in the semi-finals.

In the final party Liverpool FC defeated West Ham United with Steven Gerrard as Man Of The Match. Steven Gerrard gave the bait for the first goal, volleyed for the 2nd goal and made a phenomenal long-range shot in the 91st minute. With the score 3-3 finally the match continued with extra time and penalties.

Although during the match goalkeeper Pepe Reina several times made a fatal mistake, but at the time of the penalty managed to hold 3 of 4 kicks West Ham United players. The FA Cup Final is referred to as 'The Final of Gerrard' and is recorded as the best final party in the modern era of the FA Cup. After winning the Community Shield in 2006 and reaching the 2007 Champions League final, subsequent seasons became a season without a title for Rafael Benitez and Liverpool FC. The only good news for the Liverpudlian is its comeback 'King' Kenny Dalglish to play Liverpool FC Youth Academy in 2009.

Finally Rafael Benitez quit on 3 June 2010 and was replaced by Fulham manager Roy Hodgson. During the leadership of Rafael Benitez, Liverpool FC experienced 2 times the transfer of ownership of the club. The first was in 2007 when it was purchased by George Gillett and Tom Hicks and in 2010 when Liverpool FC took over John W. Henry's New England Sports Ventures.

ERA ROY HODGSON

On July 1, 2010 Roy Hodgson officially handled Liverpool for three years. In a press statement Roy Hodgson said it was very proud to handle a club as big as Liverpool and could not wait to meet the players, Liverpudlian and wanted to work at Melwood soon. But the situation at Liverpool FC at that time was still very uncertain as it was in transition of ownership. The tumultuous news about club bankruptcy and the prolonged transition process greatly affected the atmosphere at Liverpool FC at the time.

Liverpool FC was finally started the 2010-11 season with very bad. Until mid-October Liverpool are in the relegation zone and lost to second division club Northampton Town. In addition Liverpool face the threat of a reduction of 9 points from the FA if unable to resolve the internal situation. Finally in January 2011 Liverpool FC and Roy Hodgson agreed to end the partnership and manager's next position was held by 'King' Kenny Dalglish for the 2nd time until the end of the season.

THE RETURN OF THE KING

Right on January 8, 2011 Kenny Dalglishresmi served as Liverpool FC manager for the 2nd time. Although the inaugural match suffered defeat in the FA Cup, but 'King' Kenny Dalglish managed to restore the performance of players and the characteristic 'pass and move' Liverpool. The proof 'King' Kenny Dalglish managed to lift Liverpool from the relegation zone to position 6 English Premier League standings. This result can not be separated from the courage 'King' Kenny Dalglish to sell star players like Fernando Torres and then buy Luis Suárez from Ajax Amsterdam and Andy Carroll from Newcastle United.

Courage in terms of installing young players such as: Martin Kelly, Jay Spearing, and Danny Wilsonpun deserve thumbs up. Raihan is what makes many parties urged that 'King' Kenny Dalglish in contract permanently as Liverpool manager. Having ended the league in 8th position in the 2011-12 season, the worst league position in 18 years, Dalglish was dismissed as Liverpool manager. Dalglish was replaced by Swansea City manager Brendan Rodgers.
